When Christmas comes”.

A Russian girl is sitting in am armchair and reading a book of fairy-tales.

Her mother calls her.

Mother: Stop reading books, dear, New Year is coming. Help me to lay the table, please.

Russian girl: Just a moment, Mum. It’s my favourite tale. I wish I were there in the fairy-tale.

Music. Lights go down.

A group of children is singing Christmas carol “Holy night”.

Silent night,
Holy night,
All is calm
All is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child,
Holy infant so tender and mild.
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace.
In the forest. (slide “Winter Forest”)

Russian girl is looking around her with great interest.

Russian girl: Where am I? I can’t believe my eyes. Is it a fairy-tale? Oh, it’s cold here. Where shall I go?

A white rabbit appears on the stage. He is in a hurry. He is looking at his watch and taking it in and out of his waistcoat.

Rabbit: Oh, dear, oh dear! I’ll be too late!

Russian girl: What? A rabbit with a pocket and a watch in it? Of course, I’m in a tale. Who’s ever seen a rabbit with a watch?

Children on the other side of the stage:

  1. A cat went to town to buy a hat.
What? A cat with a hat? A hat for a cat?
Who’s ever seen a cat in a hat?
  2. A cock went to town to buy a clock.
What? A cock with a clock? A clock for a cock?
Who’s ever seen a cock with a clock?
  3. A bear went to town to buy a chair.
What? A bear with a chair? A chair for a bear?
Who’s ever seen a bear with a chair?
  4. A dog went to town to buy a log?
What? A dog with a log? A log for a dog?
Who’s ever seen a dog with a log?
  5. An owl went to town to buy a towel.
What? An owl with a towel? A towel for an owl?
Who’s ever seen an owl with a towel?
  6. A hen went to town to buy a pen.
What? A hen with a pen? A pen for a hen?
Who’s ever seen a hen with a pen?

Russian girl: Mister Rabbit, wait for me, please!

Lights go down.

Queen’s palace. (slide “Palace”)

The Queen is sitting at the desk. There is a blackboard near the desk. Rabbit comes through the gates and runs into the palace. The Russian girl enters and hides nearby.

Rabbit: Good evening, Your Majesty! I am on time (bows). Let’s start our lesson. May I ask you to write down four irregular verbs?

Queen: All right. Dictate!

Break-broke-broken
Speak-spoke-spoken
Begin-began-begun

Chancellor comes.

Chancellor: Good evening, Your Majesty! May I ask you to put Your signature? To four edicts only.

Queen: Write! Well! But then I won’t write – begin-began-begun. Give me your papers!

Chancellor: Thank you very much, Your Majesty!

Queen: And what shall I write?

Chancellor: Either “execute” or “forgiveness”.

Queen (counts): E-xe-cu-te, for-gi-ve-ness. I shall write “execute” – it is shorter.

Russian girl comes out: Stop it! What have you written?

Queen: Who are you? How dare you speak to me like this? I am your Queen.

Russian girl: You executed a person and didn’t think about him!

Queen: But I can’t write and think at the same time!

Russian girl: It isn’t necessary. First you should think and then you should write.

Queen: If I do that, I shall think and think and think and then I’ll go mad.

Russian girl: Nonsense! And besides, you are not my Queen. I am not from here. I am from Russia.

Queen: Russia? Where is it? Oh, I know, your people live on the other side of the Earth and they walk with their heads downward.

Russian girl: Do you study at school? You don’t know Geography at all. (slide “The map of Russia”)Russia is the largest country in the world with a long and interesting history and culture. Do you know how Russian people celebrated Christmas traditionally?

A group of children is going around the hall and singing Russian folk songs.

Russian girl: Russian people made up a lot of fairy-tales. One of them we prepared for you in a modern version. Can you guess the tale?

Queen: Why should I know it? Mr. Rabbit knows it well.

Rabbit: It’s Russian folk-tale “The Turnip”. But I hardly guessed it.

Queen: As for me I know Math.

Russian girl (writing at the blackboard): How much is six multiplied by six?

Queen: Six times six is eleven. Mr. Rabbit, is it OK?

Rabbit (sadly): OK, Your Majesty.

Russian girl (writing): Multiply eight by eight, please.

Russian girl: Awful!

Queen: And I know Biology very well.

Russian girl: Then answer, when do snowdrops appear in the forest?

Rabbit whispers: In April.

Queen: Snowdrops? Of course, in December, because snow falls in December.

Snowflakes dance.

Russian girl: You are wrong. It’s impossible. Snowdrops blossom in April.

Queen: OK. I want April now. I like snowdrops very much. I have never seen them.

Rabbit: April will come soon. You have to wait only three months or 90 days.

Queen: 90 days! But I can’t wait! Tomorrow we are going to have a New Year’s party. I want to have snowdrops for this party.

Rabbit (sadly): Your Majesty, you can’t break the law of Nature.

It’s winter now….

Music (winter) (slide “Winter”)

Rabbit: Then comes spring with the first dripping of melted snow and snowdrops…

Music (spring) (slide “Spring”)

Rabbit: After spring comes bright summer….

Music (summer) (slide “Summer”)

Rabbit: And then comes golden autumn with a lot of fruit and vegetables, rains and winds.

Music (autumn) (slide “Autumn”)

Queen: I’ll promulgate a new law of Nature! Mr. Rabbit! Sit down and write! I’ll dictate to you. “The grass is green.

There are a lot of flowers in our forest. Bring a basket of snowdrops to our palace for the New Year’s party! “A full basket of gold is awaiting you!” Chancellor!

Chancellor comes.

Queen: Set my seal and proclaim my order!

Chancellor: But Your Majesty…

Queen: This is my order!

Lights go down.

In the forest. (slide “Winter forest”).

It’s freezing. A giant caterpillar is sitting under the tree covered with snow.

Mr.Rabbit and Russian girl are standing and hesitating in which direction to go.

Rabbit: Let’s go this way. Frosty the famous snowman lives here. I hope he can help us.

Russian girl: I am so tired. What’s the use of looking for snowdrops in winter. Where can I sit down?

Russian girl tries to sit down on a giant caterpillar but jumps up and cries.

Russian girl: What is it? Dear me! It’s a snake!

Caterpillar: First of all can’t you be more polite and stop sitting on a delicate caterpillar?

Russian girl: Caterpillar in winter! It’s incredible!

Caterpillar: Stop talking nonsense. Can’t you see? It’s me. What are you doing here on Christmas Eve?

A group of children is singing Christmas carol “Away in a manger”.

Away in a manger, no crib for a bed

The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head.

The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay

The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

Russian girl: We are looking for snowdrops.

Caterpillar: Isn’t it more incredible to look for snowdrops in winter?

Russian girl: Certainly it is. Am I going mad?

Caterpillar: Why haven’t you said before you are going crazy? I am sure only Rudolf can help you – he is also an extraordinary creature. You have to go that way. (Show them the way).

Russian girl: Thank you. Bye.

Rabbit: Thank you Miss (kisses her hand). Shall we meet one day?

Carterpillar: Put down my phone number, ducky. (Hugs and kisses him).

Lights go down. Music.

Lights go up. Russian girl and Mr. Rabbit are going through the forest.

Chorus. Song “Rudolf the Red-Nose Reindeer”.

Rudolf, the red-nosed reindeer
Had a very shiny nose.
And if you ever saw it
Used to laugh and call him names.
They never let poor Rudolf
play in any reindeer games.

Then one foggy Christmas Eve
Santa came to say,
"Rudolf with your nose so bright,

you would even say it glows.
All of the other reindeer

Won"t you guide my sleigh tonight?"

Then how the reindeer loved him,
As they shouted out with glee:
"Rudolf the red-nosed reindeer,
you"ll go down in history!"

Rudolf appears. Russian girl and Mr. Rabbit run to him.

Rabbit: Mr. Rudolf we are so glad to see you. Can you help us to find snowdrops.

Rudolf: Snowdrops? What a strange idea! I can manage to get moss and lichen for you.

Russian girl: But we need snowdrops very much.

Rudolf: You need a real magician, you need Santa.

Russian girl: Where is he? Tell us, please, we are in a hurry.

Rudolf: I can’t tell you. He is very busy now, he is preparing Christmas gifts for children. That’s why nobody knows where he is. But you can ask Frosty.

Rabbit: Who is Frosty?

Chorus. Song “Frosty, The Snowman”.

Frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul,
With a corncob pipe and a carrot nose,
And two eyes made of coal.
Frosty the snowman is a fairy tale, they say.
He was made of snow but the children know
How he came to life one day.
There must have been some magic in that
Old silk hat they found,
For they put it on his head
He began to dance around!

O, Frosty the snowman,
Was alive as he could be!
And the children say he could
Laugh and play
Just the same as you and me.
Thumpety thump thump,
Thumpety thump thump
Look at Frosty go!
Thumpety thump thump
Thumprty thump thump
Over the hills of snow…

Frosty (appears): Who called me?

Russian girl: Dear Frosty, can you show us the way to Santa’s house. We need his help. It’s Christmas Eve now and we’d like to get a basket of snowdrops on Christmas Day.

Frosty: What strange presents do people want to have on Christmas! OK, if you guess my riddles, I’ll show you the way.

Russian girl: We’ll try and I think children will help us (to the audience). Will you help us to guess Frosty’s riddles?

It’s blue by night,
By day it’s white.
It is cold and not dry,
It falls from the sky. (Snow)

Fat and gay, on a winter day,
He came here with us to stay.
But day by day he grew sad and thin,
And so we brought his younger brother in. (A calendar)

In winter and in summer
They stand in one colour. (A fir-tree and a pine)

This is the season
When children ski
And Santa brings
The bright Christmas tree. (Winter)

Frosty: Let’s go that way. I’ll follow you, you can lose yourselves. (They are going away).

Music. Chorus “I wish I were a snowman”

I wish I were a Snowman,
So tall and big and white.
I’d never have to clean my teeth,
Or go to bed at night.
But maybe Mister Snowman
Is wishing he were me,
For I’ll be here when summer comes,
But where will the Snowman be?

Music. Song “Christmas is coming..”

Christmas is coming
The goose is getting fat
Please, to put a penny
In an old man’s hat
Please to put a penny
In an old man’s hat.
If you have no penny
A half-penny can do
If you have no half-penny
Then God bless you.

Lights go down.

Santa’s house. (slide “Santa’s house”).

Santa Claus is picking up his bag.

Santa: A new nose for Rudolf, a new broom for Frosty, a beautiful hat for the caterpillar, a basket of snowdrops for the Queen. What else? Ah, they are coming. We’ll see if they gain their presents.

All: Santa, hello. Help us, please!

Santa: All right! I’ve just learnt a new and very modern dance. If you dance with me I’ll make all your wishes come true.

Dance. Everybody is dancing.

The clock strikes.

Santa: Christmas has come!

Song “We wish you a Merry Christmas…” (All participants).

We wish you a merry Christmas

We wish you a merry Christmas
And a happy New Year!
Good tidings for you
Wherever you are
Good tidings for Christmas and a happy New Year!

SILENT NICHT

Silent night
Holy night
All is calm
All is bright
"Round yon virgin Mother and Child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night
Holy night
Son of God
Oh love"s pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus Lord at Thy birth
Oh Jesus Lord at Thy birth..

Christmas is the most popular holiday in Great Britain. It is the night from

The 24 th to the 25 th of December, when people celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. The people begin to prepare for the holiday long before it. They buy presents, cards, Christmas trees, tasty food. They send them to their friends, relatives.

The English send more than a billion Christmas cards every year. Very often we can see a small bird on Christmas cards and trees. It is a robin. The Robin is one of the symbols of Christmas.

Weihnachten its eine besondere Zeit in Deutschland.

DECEMBER.

The snow had fallen all night long

Outside my window a cardinal sang his song.

Skating and sledging when it is snowing

It is very peaceful to hear the wind blowing

December, December, beautiful December.

I was out all day and my cheeks were rosy

I hurried inside and got warm and cozy

The cocoa was yummy and very hot.

I wonder if will go out tomorrow or not

December, December, beautiful December.

Before Christmas the English buy a Christmas tree and decorate it with toys, balls and lights. The tree is often put into the window and at night one can walk along the street and watch the lights twinkling in the windows.

Long before that the English decorated their houses with different evergreens. The favorite of them are holly, ivy and mistletoe.

The most famous Christmas tree stands every year in Trafalgar Square. Since 1947 the citizens of Oslo give this tree to the citizens of London.

It is over fifty feet high. The tree is brightly decorated. Right at the top is a large shining star. The branches are draped with tinsel and hung with big brilliant stars that sparkle in the light.

Scene 1

VAKULA: Oh, Oksana, you are so charming. You are the best, the most beautiful girl in the world! I can’t eat, I can’t sleep. Will you marry me?

GIRL: Don’t believe him, Oksana. He’s a crafty fellow.

OKSANA: How can you prove that you love me?

VAKULA: I’ll make all your wishes come true.

OKSANA: I want to have the same shoes as the Tsarina herself wears. Get them for me.

GIRL: You are right, Oksana. That’s a clever idea.

VAKULA: Good bye, Oksana. I’ll either get you the shoes or die.

OKSANA: I shouldn’t have done that. I’m afraid something might happen to him. You know, I love him.

Scene 2

VAKULA: Oksana is heartless. Why do I love her so much? I’ll get the shoes for her and even the devil won’t be able to stop me!

DEVIL:

Hello, I’m the Devil. I’m here and I can do all my tricks again. Who is thinking about me?

VAKULA: Who are you?

DEVIL: I’m the Devil. Don’t worry. I won’t be in your way. I’ll help you. You’ll get the same cherevichky as the Tsarina wears. But we’ll make a deal – you’ll give me your soul for my assistance. That’s settled then, isn’t it?

VAKULA: You are not the Devil. You haven’t got a tail, have you?

DEVIL: But I have. Can’t you see it? Look, here it is.

VAKULA: I’ve caught you, and now I’ll cross you.

DEVIL: (жалобно) Please, don’t do that! Let me go!

VAKULA: No. At first you’ll do what I tell you to do. Take me to St. Petersburg!

Scene 3

POTYOMKIN: Now, Your Majesty, I’ll introduce to you one of the nationalities of your Empire.

FONVISZN: How interesting!

POTYOMKIN: These are the Zaporozhtsy. They protect our country.

FONVIZIN: I am curious to meet them. Could you repeat once again, please. I’ll write it down.

POTYOMKIN: This fool annoys me so much.

CATHERINE ll: Don’t pay attention to him. Perhaps, he’ll write a play. Where are these people?

POTYOMKIN: Come in.

VAKULA: Good afternoon, Your Majesty.

CATHERINE II: Good afternoon. How are you?

Vakula: I am fine.

CATHERINE ll: So, what can I do for you?

VAKULA: Your Majesty, your shoes are so beautiful. Could you, please, give me the same ones for my girl?

FONVIZIN: (хохочет) Bravo! I am leaving you. I’ll go to write a wonderful play right now.

CATHERINE II: (улыбается, хлопает в ладоши) Bring him my shoes.

Scene 4

OKSANA: Oh, Vakula, I’m so happy to see you again! I’ll marry you!

VAKULA: Wait a minute, Oksana. See, what a present I have for you.

OKSANA: (заглядывает в сумку) How lovely they are, but I’m even more happy that you have returned.

Girl: There will be a wedding! There will be a wedding!

Vakula : And now let’s celebrate Christmas!

It"s Christmas time, it"s Christmas time

Stand up stand up and raise a glass of wine

And you let yourself go underneath the mistletoe

Well it"s Christmas time

It"s Christmas time

Wake up wake up and find the snow outside

And your presents will be underneath the Christmas tree with me.

On Christmas Eve Children leave a long sock or stocking at the end of their bed. They hope that Father Christmas will come down the chimney during the night and bring them small presents, fruit and nuts. In the morning on Christmas day children are very excited. They open their stockings and find presents in bright paper and ribbons. Many people go to church on that day. On returning from church the whole family gather round the tree.

There is a beautiful legend about Christmas stocking. Once upon a time there lived a poor man who had three daughters. The girls couldn`t marry because they had no trousseau. On Christmas Eve they washed their stockings, hung them in front of the fireplace and went to bed. Santa Claus decided to help the girls and threw a piece of gold into each stocking.

We wish you a merry Christmas
We wish you a merry Christmas
And a happy New Year.

Refrain:
Good tidings we bring

to you and your kin.
We wish you a merry Christmas
And a happy New Year.

We all want some figgy pudding
We all want some figgy pudding

So bring it right here.

We won"t go until we get some,

We won"t go until we get some.
So bring it right here.

2 teams.

Jingle, Bells».

JINGLE, BELLS

American Folksong

Dashing through the snow

In a one-horse open sleigh

Down the hill we go

Laughing all the way.

Bells on bobtail ring,

Just making spirits bright;

Oh, what fun it is to ride and sing

A sleighing song tonight.

REFRAIN:

Jingle, bells!

Jingle, bells!

Jingle all the way!

Oh! What fun it is to ride

A day or two ago,

I thought I"d take a ride,

And soon Miss Fannie Bright

Was seated by my side.

The horse was lean and lank,

Misfortune seemed-his lot;

He got into a drifted bank,

And we, we got upset.

REFRAIN.

Now the ground is white,

Go it while you"re young,

Take the girls tonight,

And sing this sleighing song.

Just get a bobtail bay,

Two forty for his speed;

Then hitch him to an open sleigh,

And crack! you"ll take the lead.

REFRAIN:

Jingle, bells! Jingle, bells!

Jingle all the way!

Oh! What fun it is to ride

In a one-horse open sleigh. (2)

Nell : Will , can you hear music ?

Will: Oh, yes, it’s a wonderful music. Oh, look, who is that?

Christmas is coming”.

Christmas is coming. The goose is getting fat.

Please put a penny in the old man"s hat. (2)

If you have no penny, a ha" penny will do.

If you have no ha" penny then God bless you. (2)

Wake up . Today is Christmas Eve. It’s our night. It takes only once a year .

I’m a little Christmas tree

Glittering, glittering merrily.

A star at my head, and gifts at my feet.

And all my branches candy sweet.

Christmas tree, we love you so.

Live with us, play with us, do not go.

We"ll plant you outdoors

With grass at your feet

On all your branches singing birds sit.

Will: Oh, look, our tree with its toys has come to life again. Our granny was right. It’s a magic night. Oh , hello , tree ! Hello , toys !

Hello , Will ! Hello , Nell !

Will: I like Christmas. And what about you? Why do you love Christmas?

I love Christmas for many things

Trees, candles, angel wings.

Stars in the heaven, snow covered hills,

Little toy trains, dolls in their frills.

I love Christmas, ribbons of gold,

Familiar carols, so very old.

Sweet candy canes, bright red sleds,

Little ones snug in their beds.

I love Christmas most of all.

I look forward to a neighbour"s call.

A friendly chat, a cup of tea…

Love in the home means Christmas for me.

Nell: There isn’t any Christmas without Christmas tree. Let’s sing a hymn to it.

Oh , Christmas Tree !”

O, Christmas tree (2), how ever green your branches.

They are green when summer days are bright

They are green when winter snow is white.

O, Christmas tree (2), how ever green your branches.

Will (обращаясь к залу ): Do you know, children, any songs about Christmas tree? Let s sing !

Nell: Can you hear a bell? What is it ?

Will: These are jingling bells.

Jingle bells”.

Dashing through the snow

On a one-horse open sleigh,

Over the fields we go,

Laughing all the way;

Bells on bob-tail ring,

Making spirits bright,

What fun it is to ride and sing

A sleighing song tonight, O

Jingle bells, jingle bells,

Jingle all the way!

O what fun it is to ride

In a one-horse open sleigh (repeat)

A day or two ago,

I thought I"d take a ride,

And soon Miss Fanny Bright

Was seated by my side;

The horse was lean and lank;

Misfortune seemed his lot;

He got into a drifted bank,

And we, we got upset. O

A day or two ago,

The story I must tell

I went out on the snow

And on my back I fell;

A gent was riding by

In a one-horse open sleigh,

He laughed as there I sprawling lie,

But quickly drove away, O

Now the ground is white

Go it while you"re young,

Take the girls tonight

And sing this sleighing song;

Just get a bob-tailed bay

Two-forty as his speed

Hitch him to an open sleigh

And crack! You’ll take the lead, O

Nell: But do you think that’s all? Oh, no, the miracles are going on. Even the stars are coming to life again.

Twinkle, twinkle, little star”.

Up above the world so high like a diamond in the sky.

Twinkle, twinkle, little star, how I wonder what you are.

When the traveler in the dark thanks you for your tiny spark.

He couldn’t see the way to go if you didn’t twinkle so.

Twinkle, twinkle, little star, how I wonder what you are.

Will: Our granny was right about the miracles. She said, Santa Claus would bring us the presents. What would you like ?

Nell: I"d like a doll smiling and crying. And you ?

Will: I"d like a hammer and tacks, a whistle and a ball.

Nell: Let"s put our cards with our wishes into the stockings and Santa Claus will do them.

Звучит вступление к песне “ Up to the Housetop ”. Исполняется песня “Up to the Housetop”.

Up on the housetop reindeer pause

Out jumps good old Santa Clause

Down through the chimney with lots of toys

All for the little ones Christmas joys

Ho, ho, ho! Who wouldn"t go!

Ho, ho, ho! Who wouldn"t go!

Up on the housetop Click, click, click

Down through the chimney with

Good Saint Nick

First comes the stocking of little Nell

Oh, dear Santa fill it well

Give her a dolly that laughs and cries

One that will open and shut her eyes

Next comes the stocking of little Will

Oh, just see what a glorious fill

Here is a hammer and lots of tacks

Also a ball and a whistle that cracks

The sunrise is coming.

Our time is over.

We wish you a Merry Christmas.

We wish you a Merry Christmas”.

And a Happy New Year!

Let"s all do a little clapping (3)

And spread Christmas cheer.

Will: It was a wonderful night. I’m so sorry it’s over!

Nell : Don t worry about it . We"ll meet our friends next year. See you !

1: Dear children and guests! On the 25th of December people celebrate Christmas – a beautiful holiday, which is loved by children and adults; when everything is decorated with lights and toys; when we see Christmas trees everywhere; when people buy presents and cook special food, send cards and have parties!

2: Well, the candles are lit, the Christmas tree is glittering with lights, the fire in the fire-place is burning. It’s time to begin the festival. The festival of Christmas.

3: Everybody of you has his own mas, his own birthday which is celebrated with a light pie and tasty lemonade. But this occasion is something special; this is birthday of Jesus, our Savior. He was born on the 25-th of December, nearly 2.000 years ago. Are you interested how it happened? So listen.

1: Long, long ago in the town of Nazareth the carpenter Joseph lived. Joseph had a wife, Maria. The god’s angel once came to her and said:

Ангел: I come down from the heavens and ask you to listen carefully. A child will be born this evening. One day he will be king. Follow that star and you will find this prince of peace. The child"s name will be Jesus.

We will follow the star to our prince.

Mary has given birth to a baby boy. She and Joseph are sitting with their newborn child, Jesus. They are surrounded by barnyard animals. The three approach. The star is visible in the night sky.

Joseph, we have a beautiful baby boy.

Иосиф: Yes Mary. Mary darling, look there. (Показывает на приближающихся волхвов) Who are these men approaching us?

1. Greetings. I want to wish you great happiness and joy. I offer you, the parents of this child Jesus, my gift of gold. May this child have a life rich in experience.
2. Congratulations Mary and Joseph. This gist of spices and perfumes is for you my new prince. I have come many miles to find you. We know you are special and have only the best of wishes for you.
3. Mary and Joseph (кланяется) thank you for this wonderful baby. I have come many miles to bring you this gift. You’ll be good parents and enjoy this child"s life. Happy Birthday Baby Jesus!

He loves you like a father.
He has you in his hands.
He says all men are brothers.
He gives you happy chance.
Wherever you’re going
He’s going your way.
Whatever you’re doing
He’s making your fate.
He leads you in the darkness.
He saves you day and night.
He gotta stop the fighters.
He’s mighty, he is high.

2: Our festival is going on. In the centre of London at the Trafalgar square stands enormous green tree, gift from people of Oslo. In every house there stand evergreen trees, because the evergreen trees are the symbols of eternal life. Under the Christmas tree they put a manger with Christ baby.

3: The Germans are believed to be the first to use the Christmas tree in their celebrations, and Martin Luther was the first to place a star on the top of the tree. This star represent the star that appeared over the stable in which Christ was born.

1: The well – known image of Santa Claus was invented by Coca – Cola. The producers of this soft drink were very unhappy because their soft drink was considered a “summer” drink. They wanted to sell it in the winter too. So they hired a guy called Haddon Sandblom to make a nice ad for them. Sundblom immediately thought of Santa Claus. Actually, he modeled him more or less on his friendly neighbor, who had a round face, a short beard and a red nose… So thanks to Coca Cola, half the world is now giving each other expensive gifts for Christmas.

2: The house is decorated with twigs of mistletoe and holy. Holy, because before death Jesus was wearing the garland of holy, and mistletoe is the symbol of love and reconciliation under which a boy may kiss a girl, asking pardon for the pranks. It is said that the girl who was not kissed under it at Christmas would not get married that year.

3: On Christmas we must forgive each others all offences and ask pardon for everything. On the Christmas Eve there is a fuss in towns, everybody’s making preparations. Offices are closed at 1 o’clock, but shops are working. Postmen hurry to deliver millions of Christmas cards, young people in the streets are singing Christmas songs, collecting money for poor people.

1: But the main event of Christmas is the Christmas dinner with traditional turkey or goose, and pudding. Every young woman in each household helps to stir the Christmas pudding if she wishes to be married that year.
Christmas is the family event, all are gathering at one table, act the scene about Christ birth, play games, sing Christmas songs. Carol singing is an essential part of Christmas. No church or school is without its carol service.

1: In this city a lot of people gather in Times Square and watch the “Big Apple” fall. The “Big Fall” isn’t a real apple. It`s a moving picture of an apple on the side of one of the big buildings in Times Square. Every New Year’s Eve during the last few seconds before midnight it starts to “fall” down the building, and when it gets to the bottom it’s the start of the new year.

2: In this country housewives start cooking special food for New Year’s Day and all the members of the family do a big cleaning up. The idea is to get rid of the dirt of the past year, and welcome the new year without it. On the television or radio you can hear 108 bells. The 108th bell rings just a second before the midnight. The people say: ”Happy New Year!” People eat the special food and drink rice wine during the meal.

3: People call the New Year’s Eve “Hogmanay”.They visit their friend’s houses just after midnight on the New Year’s night. The first person who comes to your house brings you luck. At midnight when the clock begins to strike 12,the head of the family goes to the entrance door, opens it wide and holds it until the last stroke. Then he shuts the door. He has let the old year out and let the New Year in.

1: This country is sometimes called “the upside down world”. It lies in the Southern Hemisphere. During the Christmas holidays people often sunbathe on the beach or swim and surf in the ocean. On the 31st of December many people go to the country for the picnic. In January the temperatures are from 20 to 30 degree above zero or higher.

2: In this country it can be dangerous to have a walk at night at the end of December. People usually throw the old things from the houses through the windows: broken cups and plates, old clothes and boots and sometimes different pieces of furniture. People believe that on the New Year’s Eve the magician Befaniya comes to the houses through the chimney and put the presents for children in their stockings or shoes.
